Spring is the time when many of us dust our bikes off ready to get riding again, and have some fun.
At Cycle Hub, we want you to stay safe while you’re having fun, so we’ve put together a pre-Summer check list to make sure your bike not only looks the part but is ready for action too.
Give your bike a clean!
Using detergent, a sponge, and warm water, give your bike a wash. This will not only make your bike look better, it’s also a great opportunity to carry out a visual inspection.
Tighten any loose nuts or bolts
If you noticed some loose nuts and bolts then check over the whole bike and ensure everything is safe and tight. Don’t overtighten as this could cause serious damage.
Pump up your tyres and check your wheels
If you haven’t used your bike for a while the chances are your tyres will need some more air. The correct tyre pressure is normally indicated on the side of your tyres. It’s also a good idea to check tyres for cracks. If you find any then replace the tyre. Next, check your wheel rims for any dinks, and ensure your spokes are neither bent nor loose.
Check your chain
Your chain should be clean and well lubricated. Wipe any dirt off with a rag as dirty chains can wear out quickly. Make sure your chain is oiled correctly; too much oil will attract dirt, too little cause wear. Check to see if your chain is loose as this can be dangerous. Many bikes will allow you to tighten your chain simply if required.
Test your brakes
Lift each of your wheels off the ground and make them spin, then pull on your brake levers. If your wheels don’t stop spinning instantly don’t use your bike until they have been fixed. Next, let your brake levers go and spin your wheels again. If there is any rubbing then it’s time to adjust your brakes. Also take a look at your brake cables and if they stick, oil them. If they are frayed replace them.
Try your gears
Take your bike out for a very short ride. Move up and down through the gears and make sure they are changing smoothly. If they are not it could mean you need a simple adjustment, or you may need to replace a part or two.
Adjust your saddle
Make sure your saddle is positioned comfortably for you. When you sit on it, is your leg slightly bent at the bottom of the downward stroke? Is your saddle too far back causing you to overstretch? Correct saddle position will make riding more efficient and enjoyable.
Inspect your lights
Lights make you more visible in the day as well as at night. If you don’t have any you should get some. Check your lights are working and adjusted so you can see the road immediately in front of you, and others can see you. Don’t forget to check your batteries, so they won’t let you down when you need them.
Check your saddle bag
Your saddle bag is your bike’s first aid kit; it can help get you get home safely if things go wrong. Make sure you have: a spare inner tube, a puncture repair kit, a multi-tool, a pump, and some tyre levers.
