Maidenhead Cycle Hub and One Housing worked together to provide activities during the school holidays.
One Housing exists to help people to live better. They do this by creating affordable homes for people who struggle to afford a place to live. They provide care and support to thousands of people in the community and they help people to get work and stand on their own two feet. They fund all of this by building and selling homes on the open market.
As part of their pledge to help people live better One Housing provide activities for children during the school holidays to give them something interesting to do and help improve their way of life. This is where Maidenhead Cycle Hub and One Housing have decided to partner together.
In October 2016 Maidenhead Cycle Hub ran a Dr Bike session with a difference as part of the activities calendar. Our head mechanic Roger took his gazebo and tools along to their local centre and worked with the children on some of their bikes to check them over and make sure that the bikes they are riding are safe. Why was it with a difference? Because rather than just working on the bikes himself Roger worked with the children showing them how to do some basic maintenance on their own bikes.
The children, aged 8-14, really enjoyed the session and were keen to see us return so more bikes could be checked and they could learn more.
Maidenhead Cycle Hub will continue to work with One Housing offering further sessions during holidays which will also include more bike maintenance and helping children learn to ride.
We will also run some organised rides over the summer of 2017 within the local borough. To promote these further to everyone we will provide bikes to any children who don’t have a bike of their own.
“Roger was very good and I’m very pleased with the outcome of the project” Mr S Murfitt, One Housing
